Wines from South Australia

________________________________________________________________________

My friend Ina came to visit me from Germany and I am on a mission to make her enthusiastic about Australian wine. Well, that wasn’t too hard. After six weeks of travelling and tasting we are celebrating Ina’s last night in Australia with a Yalumba Shiraz-Viognier 2006 which Ina choose herself after a great tasting experiences in the Barossa Valley.

We both like the little bit of fineness that the Viognier adds to this rather full-bodied wine. Ina describes the taste as black pepper, dried figs, walnuts, cacao and black currant.

d'Arenberg Cellar Door in South Australia

__________________________________________________________________

Our South Australian wine specialist Helene spent a whole day with d’Arenberg in McLaren Vale – a magic day as she writes to us. She really enjoyed the very personal touch that wines, winery and wine makers bring across.

It is a family winery and you really can tell.

Lethbridge Wines in Geelong Victoria

Lesen Sie selbst:

“After hoping and praying for rain for the past 10 weeks, it finally came last weekend, at just the WRONG time. Fortunately we had no damaging storms or hail, but 60 mm of rain just when the grapes are ready to pick inevitably means that the sugar levels go down as the berries take up water.

We were hoping for a quick recovery, but after sampling all week it looks like we still have another week or so until the berries lose some of that water. After establishing a reputation for powerful Pinot Noir the last thing we want is watery wine.

Harvesting Crew Downunder

If you had booked for the picking this weekend (14th March) then we are sorry to disappoint, but the event is being re-scheduled for the following Saturday 20th March. If you are available to pick on that day we would love to see you, click here to book, same start time, approx 9:00 am, hope you can make it… ”

In less than two weeks time, New South Wales Wine Week kicks off on Sunday March 14 with a Sydney Cellar Door installed in the city’s Hyde Park. What started as a smallish outdoor wine-show a couple of years ago has now become the state’s biggest outdoor wine event. A week-long celebration of NSW Wine in restaurants throughout the city and the State rounds up this unique marketing event for the wines from NSW.

20,000 people are expected to converge on Hyde Park South on Sunday March 14 for Sydney Cellar Door. This year more than 110 wineries from all over NSW travel to Sydney. Food from regional producers and Sydney restaurateurs will complement the wine on offer and all-day entertainment will create a real festival atmosphere.

The Australian Government this week launched a series of “in your face” advertisements aimed at tackling the binge-drinking epidemic among young Australians. Here in Australia, the month of December marks the start of the so-called schoolies – a series of party weeks at scenic places across Australia for young kids to celebrate their end of the school year: get drunk and do all these things that they ever wanted to when being away from home.

Schoolies are a concern every year

As schoolies kicks off on the Gold Coast the coming weekend, this campaign is a wake-up call to young Australians about the dangers of binge-drinking. The theme of the campaign is “Don’t turn a night out into a nightmare”, and demonstrates the violence, injury and humiliation that can result from binge-drinking.

The campaign will spearhead the Australian Government’s National Binge Drinking Strategy and is targeted at teenagers aged 15-17 years and young adults aged 18-25 years and their parents.

We at Downunder Wines support this campaign strongly – too many assaults, too many young people injured, too many girls assaulted. It is about time to wake up – do not drink alcohol excessively – we want you all to enjoy responsibly and respect others.
______________________________________________________________________

If you can’t sell them, you have to find a different solution. And this is what Australian beer and wine giant Foster’s has just done with the smaller end of its wine business.

Foster's Headoffice in Melbourne

David Dearie, Managing Director, Wine Australia and New Zealand today announced Foster’s intention to transfer 13 Australian wine brands to a joint venture with Vok Beverages Pty Ltd (Vok Beverages). Foster’s will hold a 50% interest in the joint venture company.

But who is Vok Beverages? They claim to be the exclusive Australian distributor for a number of Diageo brands which include Ruski, Bullet Bourbon, J&B Whisky, Dimple or Pimms. The company also distributes a range of proprietary brands such as Three Oaks Cider, Infused Rush, HI NRG, VOK Liqueurs and Bickford’s non alcoholic cordials.

So, in the future, these guys will assume responsibility for the marketing, sales and management of the thirteen former Foster’s wine brands as early as from the 1st of December 2009.

The brands to be transferred to the joint venture are Queen Adelaide, Half Mile Creek, Minchinbury, Matthew Lang, Andrew Garrett, Maglieri of McLaren Vale, Rouge Homme, Great Western, Cartwheel, Fishers Circle, Galway Pipe, Boronia and Yarra Ridge. Foster’s intends to continue to produce wine for the joint venture and celebrates this strategic move by stating: “this joint venture allows Foster’s to focus on wine making, distribution and marketing of its core portfolio.” The thirteen brands above now know at least, that they are not considered ‘core’ any more.
___________________________________________________

‘Last weekend while staying down at Second Valley (South Australia) I stumbled across the Trafford Hill winery.

A tiny boutique winery at only 600 cases per year I happily sampled the Sparkling Shiraz named after his granddaughter ‘Isabella’. It was gorgeous, creamy and perfect for a spring afternoon in the SA hills – yum!

Go visit John & Irene, you won’t regret it.’

I think the habits of so called wine experts are to our advantage, let us capture the moment...

Michael met Nardia Guillaumier from NEG Photography at the Kiama Wine Show a few days ago. They started talking about photography and how to deal with the wine business. Both decided to have an interview to understand a photographer’s view of the wine trade. Read here what Nardia thinks about taking shots of wine bottles. Enjoy responsibly.

Photography at a Wine Show

downunderwines: Nardia, thanks for your time, let us start with a question about when you started with photography?
Nardia: I have been taking photos since my husband bought a Canon 300D camera in 2002 for his birthday, just for fun. He has never had a chance to use the camera though. But I have taken some great shots for friends weddings, family portraits, landscapes and businesses. In 2009 I have completed my Diploma in Photography and decided to start NEG photography as a semi hobby and profession. I never realised it would take off so quickly. But I am loving every assignment and really enjoy meeting new and interesting people.

downunderwines: How did you come to making photos at wine shows?
Nardia: JAi Events, located in Kiama, gave me the opportunity to capture some images for the Kiama Regional Wine Show this year. It allowed me to start snapping photos straight away, in fact I think I took around 350 photos on the day.

downunderwines: Isn’t it boring to take photos of wine bottles?
Nardia: Photography is only what you make it, as is everything. Any subject can be made interesting, imagination is only limited by your mind not by the cost of film.

downunderwines: What is the most difficult when taking photos of wines?
Nardia: In photographing the Kiama Regional Wine show, the reflections were a little difficult to master and also keeping the shots modern and innovative.

Hunter Valley's Keith Tulloch

downunderwines: How do you cope with wine experts and their habits?
Nardia: I think their habits are to our advantage. As without their amazing palates and vivid descriptions of flavour, then as tasting novices we would have no idea what characteristics to look for. Everyone has their talent, which could be seen as habits for some.

downunderwines: So tell us, what is your favourite wine?
Nardia: At the moment Sauvignon Blanc.

downunderwines: If wine – red or white?
Nardia: Depending on what mood I am in. Party time – it’s white, relax and vege, its a red – normally Merlot.

downunderwines: What regions have you visited in Australia that produced wine?
Nardia: Southern Highlands, Shoalhaven, Barossa, Hunter Valley, Riverina, Coonawarra and Margaret River… is that too many?

downunderwines: Can you tell us of any anecdotes on wine people or wine drinkers?
Nardia: Well my husband, Brian and I love wine. Me more than him, I should say to be fair. On one of our adventures on the road (actually seeing the Solar Eclipse at Lyndhurst, SA, 2002) we visited the Coonawarra. After having drunk one too many with my sisters Marika and Sarsha, we all fell asleep, except for Brian who was the designated driver. Whilst driving Brian saw a wedged-tail eagle sitting right by the side of the road. Being my favourite bird, Brian did try to wake me (so he tells me). But due to the amount of tastings I had had, I didn’t wake up. When I did wake after 2.5 hours asleep, Brian told me about the magnificent eagle. My first response was…’Why didn’t you wake me?’ The look of dispare on his face was hilarious. Still to this day he tells this story. What can I say, just love wine …

downunderwines: So, how can people get in touch with you for their next shot?
Nardia: Either by emailing me on negphotography@bigpond.com or by visiting my website. I also have a facebook group, NEG photography, join up if you wish.

Nardia, thank you very much for your time and good luck with the next wine show.

Orange dust cover no threat for vines in NSW.

I woke up this morning at about 5:30am and when I looked out of the window, I saw the world turned orange. My initial thoughts about an apocalypse happening over Sydney was quickly corrected by the coughing of my asthmatic son. There was dust in the air – the whole of Sydney had suddenly turned orange.

Bondi Beach in orange dust

This shot was taken by a friend of mine and it shows our famous Bondi Beach at about 7am. Get this.

And Michael sent me a photo of the roof of his car, which had turned brown-orange in front of the vineyard. The clouds in the sky had helped blow the dust away in the Highlands – much healthier for everyone living up there.

Green car turns orange

A quick phone call to a winemaker confirmed: no risk for the vines – there aren’t any grapes visible yet – it is still the beginning of spring here in Australia. That is the good news of the day.
_________________________
