Nachgefragt bei australischen Winzern in Orange: wie wird dieser Jahrgang?
Nun hatten wir also viel Sonne und letztlich extrem viel Regen in den vergangenen Monaten Down Under. Das führte natürlich zu einigen Sorgenfalten bei den Winzern des Landes.

Wir haben nachgefragt in der Cool Climate Region Orange in NSW, wie denn dieser Jahrgang werden wird. Denn eines ist klar: Regen zur falschen Zeit kann für einen kompletten Jahrgang katastrophale Auswirkungen haben.
Printhie’s Management erklärt, daß dieser Jahrgang einen Monat früher als sonst beendet wurde. Seit 2007 ist das somit der ‘schnellste Jahrgang’ Australiens. Nach einer extrem trockenen Phase zwischen August und Dezember begann dann um Weihnachten herum der Regen – nicht gerade geschätzt in dieser kritischen Zeit, da die Trauben anfällig sind für Krankheiten jeder Art.
Nick Butler von Belgravia Wines ergänzt: “wir sind sehr zufrieden mit der Ernte in diesem Jahr, auch wenn wir zwischen Dezember und Februar viele schlaflose Nächte hatten, denn der viele und für uns unerwartete Regen hat seine besonderen Eigenschaften, die es zu managen gilt.”
Wir sind gespannt auf diesen Jahrgang, nach vollzogener Ernte befindet sich die Vielzahl der Trauben jetzt in Fässern zur weiteren Bearbeitung.

So we had the rain, and we had loads of sunshine in certain regions Down Under: this year’s harvest will vary from wine region to wine region that is for sure.
We have checked in cool climate wine region Orange, NSW and asked winegrowers how they predict the vintage this year.
Orange region winegrower Printhie reports that the 2010 vintage has finished about a month earlier than usual – the earliest finish since 2007. The grape growing season was consistently early right from the very start of budburst through to harvesting. This has been a blessing in disguise as post-Christmas rain could have caused widespread quality concerns if it had been a normal or late season.
After a very warm, dry and windy spring where dust storms resulted in poor flowering in some varieties, the season was saved by welcome rain between Christmas and New Year. However, as the ripening period progressed, the rain kept coming and the disease threat increased. Well managed vineyards avoided significant disease problems.
“There are some lovely wines in the winery and it is proving to be a very strong year for Orange variety Chardonnay,” said Printhie winemaker Drew Tuckwell. “The reds largely avoided disease issues due to low yields and loose bunches. Sauvignon blanc was a little more tricky – high yields and tight bunches meant botrytis was a constant threat as the fruit ripened.”
“We had to be extremely careful with our grapes this year,” adds Nick from Belgravia, part of the Union Bank Group establishment in downtown Orange. “The red yields are down significantly but the quality proves to be very good. We are very optimistic as we look after quality in the vineyard and we think that we will see some outstanding wines this year.”

Die Sydney Weinwoche beginnt in zwei Wochen
Die New South Wales Wine Week (14. bis 20. März) wird in weniger als 2 Wochen in Sydney abgehalten. Die NSW Wine und der lokale ‘Sydney Morning Herald’ sind die Veranstalter dieses jährlichen Events und dieses Jahr verspricht das bereits sehr erfolgreiche Vorjahr noch in den Schatten zu stellen.

Mehr als 20.000 Besucher werden, jeweils mit einem Weinglas ausgerüstet, die mehr als 110 verschiedenen Winzer im Hyde Park aufsuchen. Einige der Winzer haben im vergangenen Jahr mit mehr als sechs Personen auf ihrem Stand ohne abzusetzen ausgeschenkt. Die Sydney Wine Week ist somit auch eine grossartige Gelegenheit, auf einzelne Weine aufmerksam zu machen und den direkten Kontakt zum Kunden zu suchen.
Und für sie als Weinliebhaber kann es jetzt nur heissen: auf geht’s nach Sydney am 14. März.

In less than two weeks time, New South Wales Wine Week kicks off on Sunday March 14 with a Sydney Cellar Door installed in the city’s Hyde Park. What started as a smallish outdoor wine-show a couple of years ago has now become the state’s biggest outdoor wine event. A week-long celebration of NSW Wine in restaurants throughout the city and the State rounds up this unique marketing event for the wines from NSW.
20,000 people are expected to converge on Hyde Park South on Sunday March 14 for Sydney Cellar Door. This year more than 110 wineries from all over NSW travel to Sydney. Food from regional producers and Sydney restaurateurs will complement the wine on offer and all-day entertainment will create a real festival atmosphere.

Die australische Airline Qantas entscheidet sich für einen Sauvignon Blanc aus Orange
Einer meiner grossen Favoriten aus der Weinregion Orange, Belgravia Vineyards, wurde heute eine besonderen Auszeichnung zuteil: der 2009er Sauvignon Blanc wird ab sofort bei der australischen Airline Belgravia ausgeschenkt.

Jeder, der weiss wie hart die Zugangskriterien bei Qantas sind, wird diese Nachricht schätzen. Das Qantas Tasting Panel ist sehr penibel wenn es um Qualitätsbeurteilung der Weine geht, insbesondere wenn, wie in diesem Fall, die internationalen Flüge damit bestückt werden.

Orange winery Angullong releases its 2009 Sauvignon Blanc
I recently travelled the Orange wine region and came across Angullong wines, a small family owned winery which claimed dual trophies at the 2008 Sydney Royal Wine Show. This huge achievement made their wines a highly demanded good, even in the Orange region itself. The cellar door on a rainy day was a good place to start tasting these wines.
Sydney Royal Wine winner releases new Sav Blanc
Angullong Wines has recently released their much anticipated 2009 Angullong Sauvignon Blanc and 2008 Angullong Cabernet Merlot, both made from grapes grown on Angullong’s Orange vineyard.
The Crossing family, owners of the Angullong property since 1950, have paid particular attention to the vineyard, ensuring that the quality and consistency of their vines is reflected in the wines that they make.
“We have a range of soils types and aspects in our 220 hectare vineyard, giving us a broad range of flavour profiles and characteristics within the varieties,” commented Ben Crossing. “This has proven to be a useful advantage and, with the cool to cold climate of the Orange region, has given us great consistency of style with our wines.”
Orange is proving to be one of the top regions for cool climate Sav Blacs, offering riper tropical fruit flavours, with well balanced acidity, giving consumers a greater choice and experience from the New Zealand or French styles available.

Ein australischer Riesling aus Orange – Word of Mouth 2009 – cool climate white at its best
Der australische Riesling ist einen weiten Weg gekommen – ich werde eines Tages einen grossen Test der besten deutschen und australischen Rieslings machen, das nehme ich mir fest vor.
Heute abend geniesse ich einen Riesling aus der Orange Region – der cool climate Gegend im Westen von NSW. Der Wein gehoert zur Reihe der ‘Word of Mouth’ Weine, einer Familien geführter Winery, die auf ca. 1.000 Meter Höhe ihre Weine anbaut.
Seine Farbe ist leicht grün, das Aroma eröffnet einen leichten Zitrusduft und sein Säuregehalt und langer Abgang zeigen von einem sehr gepflegtem Wein, der über viele Jahre hinweg in ihrem Keller lagern kann. Füer die nächsten 10 Jahre können Sie diesen Wein kellern – ich bezweifele, dass der Wein das so lange in ihrem Keller schafft.

Riesling from Orange Australia
Australian Riesling has come a long way – there are quite a few regions, which produce Riesling wines that can compete with the recently re-born German grands.
I tried a Word of Mouth Riesling the other day, with another great season and slightly cooler than 2008, the winery produced an outstanding wine. Light straw green, this wine has delicately perfumed talc and fresh cut lime aromas.
I enjoyed the taste of lime juice on the palate. Finishing long and clean with the perfect balance of acidity and the barest hint of sweetness.
Asking the winemaker about its aging potential I received the answer, that the Riesling has a potential to develop richer honeyed notes as it matures. They even recommend it to drink now to 2019.
Not sure whether I can wait this long.

My Drink Today is …
The series about ‘my drink today‘ has started well, we received many requests for entry and were also asked frequently what we are actually drinking ourselves on the night.
08 Sorrenberg Gamay: my drink today
This is the reason why I am posting my own photo with a great drink today. My wine today is a 2008 Sorrenberg Gamay from Beechworth – a fantastic drop with only a handful of bottles made every year. This style of Gamay is a combination of Burgundian and Beaujolais techniques and what I really like about it is that 10% Pinot Noir are used in the blend.
I bought the wine in Orange at Union Bank, a wonderful wine shop with an amazing variety of wines from all regions across Australia.

Ich selbst trinke heute abend einen Sorrenberg Gamay aus dem Jahr 2008, gekauft habe ich die Flasche bei meinem Besuch in Orange letzte Woche. Seine Farbe ist eine Mischung aus Magenta und sehr dunklem Violet, seine Nase verspricht Kirsche und dunkle Beeren und seine wunderbare Struktur umschmeichelt meine Geschmacksknospen. Ein sehr runder Wein auch wenn 1-2 Jahre im Keller ihn noch verbessern werden. Zu schade, diese Flasche wird das nicht mehr erleben.

Der 2006er Cool Climate Pinot Noir von Brangayne aus Orange
Brangayne of Orange is a winery which claims a highly famous prize within their trophies won over the past years: their 2008 Sauvignon Blanc won a Gold Medal of the New Zealand International Wine Show this year – a prize that is as difficult to achieve as a win for the Wallabies at the All Blacks in Rugby Union.

I met Marianne Brown on a cold, rainy and windy spring day while visiting the cellar door, no one else around and while looking at the photos with snowy poplar trees on the walls of the shed, I was clearly reminded that this part of their winery lies above 1,000 metres in altitude.
Quickly I begin to understand that this boutique winery emphasises on the cool climate traditions – the wines include the regional ‘hero’ Sauvignon Blanc, an unwooded as well as a Reserve Chardonnay. Asked for her personal favourites Marianne tells me that due to the cold weather she really likes the reds at the moment, the 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon recently won a Gold medal at the Australian Cool Climate Wine Show and the newly released 2006 Shiraz was outstanding when I tried it at the cellar door on the day.

I chose the 2006 Pinot Noir for the night – cherry red in colour – and though still young already displaying strong wild berry characteristics. The palate shows ripe plums with a well balanced acidity – a real highlight of a finely crafted cool climate Pinot Noir. I enjoy its long finish and finish the bottle on the same night in front of a warm fire – Orange in October can be a bit chilly.

Der Held der Region Orange ist die Sauvignon Blanc Traube – sie gewinnt sogar im Sav Blanc Heimatland Neuseeland Goldmedaillien – so geschehen dieses Jahr in Form des 2008er Sav Blanc von Brangayne.
Die Winery besetzt zwei verschiedene Hügel um Orange auf 1000 und 850 Meter Hoehe, hier wachsen die Trauben für vorzügliche cool climate Weine heran. Das Sortiment umfasst neben den Sav Blancs zwei Chardonnays, einen Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz und Pinot Noir.
Wir geniessen einen noch recht jungen und doch grossartigen Pinot Noir aus dem Jahrgang 2006 zum Dinner und bei offenem Feuer – draussen tobt der Regen bei gerade einmal 5 Grad Celsius – Orange im Frühling kann doch recht kalt sein.

Lunch at Orange’s most famous bank
The old and heritage listed building of Union bank in Orange is the place to be while heading for lunch or dinner. Light meals garned with local produce help you concentrate on the major reason why being there: the wines.

Unionbank’s wine list is outstanding. It includes both – the local top drops and some of my favourite wines from all over Australia.
The owners of Unionbank are well known for hosting wine dinners with celebrity winemakers from various other regions. This week Clonakilla’s own Tim Kirk from Murrumbateman in the Canberra District hosts a 5 star dinner with his wines on trial.
The wine store next door is home to many wonderful wines from across the country, from Sorrenberg Gamay to Ben Glaetzer’s Godolphin, from D’Arenberg’s Dead Arm to Moss Woods finest wines, you’ll find them here. Rarely have I seen a bottleshop that well equipped in the midst of a wine region itself.
So give this restaurant a try – and help yourself to a few wines on the glass, this is a great opportunity to get to know the local stars of the Orange wine district or even beyond.

Wine store and Wine Bar
Mitten im Zentrum der 30,000 Einwohner zählenden Weinmetropole Orange liegt das alte Gebäude der Union Bank. Darin befindet sich ein gut gestyltes Restaurant mit gleichem Namen und einem kleinen Biergarten direkt hinter dem Haus. In der Remise nebenan ist ein Bottleshop – gefüllt mit den Top-Weinen aus der Region und aus ganz Australien.
Ich habe hier Down Under sehr selten einen solch gut sortierten Weinhandel gesehen, der inmitten einer der Weinregionen liegend den Fokus auch auf die hochklassigen (und -preisigen) Weine anderer Regionen Australiens und Neuseelandes gelegt hat. Der Grund: “die Weine aus unserer Region hier in Orange müssen sich auch im Laden gegen die besten Weine aus ganz Australien beweisen koennen – deshalb führen wir ein solch breites exklusives Sortiment,” erklärt mir Nick Butler, Sales Manager im Wine Store in unserem Gespräch.
Keine Frage – der Besuch lohnt sich.
