Sydney is currently celebrating its famous NYE 9pm fireworks with many families watching the scene close to the Harbour Bridge as we did in the past years Down Under. Here in snowy Europe, we have to wait a little while before it is our turn.

Our drink for tonights NYE party is a Riesling Sekt from Van Volxem, Mosel – a Brut 1900 from Roman Niewodniczanski, a good winemaking friend and one of the most visible profiles of Germany’s new winemaking talents. Cheers.

Chinese food and wine pairing is a key factor in the competition, which is the first truly Asian wine competition in the world. Sashimi is traditionally considered the finest food in Japanese cuisine and Bird in Hand’s Chief Winemaker, Kym Milne MW, says the Bird in Hand Sparkling Pinot Noir is one of the wineries most loved and recognized wines – and a perfect match with the subtle sashimi flavours.

“Our Sparkling Pinot Noir is a subtle, vibrant pink sparkling wine, with fresh strawberry and floral like aromas, fine persistent bubbles and a refreshing flavour,” said Milne. “The cool Adelaide Hills nights are ideal for sparkling wine production and help the Pinot Noir to retain bright, fresh, strawberry and cherry-like characters, and good natural acidity which is so important for quality sparkling wine production.”

Asia’s most esteemed wine judges from China, Singapore, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and India gathered to judge the Hong Kong International Wine & Spirit Competition and the strong showing by Australian wines demonstrate their sensitivity and suitability to the Asian palate and cultural consumption patterns.

Bird in Hand is enjoying strong growth in Asia and recently opened two upmarket cellar doors in North East China, with more planned in 2012. “Asia is an important pillar in our global expansion and our awards in the Hong Kong International Wine & Spirit Competition will undoubtedly bolster our sales and marketing efforts in the region,” said Executive Director and founder of Bird in Hand, Andrew Nugent.

Eine australische Spezialität ist der Sparkling Pinot Noir, wenn er aus den Adelaide Hills kommt, dann ist er ‘cool climate’ kreiert und zeigt typischerweise feine Noten auf.

So auch im Fall des ‘Bird in Hand’ Sparkling Pinot, der als beste Ergänzung zu Sashimi in Hongkong gewählt wurde, jawohl, im chinesischen HK gibt es einen Wettbewerb zur Ergänzung zu einer typisch japanischen Speise. Grossartig und definitif einen Post wert bei Downunder Wines.

Als Asienmeister immerhin mit einem gewissen Status nach Deutschland angereist galten die australischen Fußball-Mädels als krasser Außenseiter und jetzt sind sie plötzlich als Gruppenzweiter im Viertelfinale. Schweden oder USA, das ist jetzt der nächste Gegener, auch in diesem Spiel wird man wieder Außenseiter sein.

Egal – die Mädels spielen phasenweise tollen Fußball, haben mit einer 16 und einer 17 Jährigen einige sehr junge Spielerinnen im Team und gefallen durch tolle Passkombinationen und einen immer währenden Druck aufs Tor. Bye-bye Norway – it’s time for the Aussie girls – keep on waltzing Matildas…

They have reached the quarter finals, extremely cool this performance by Australian women’s football team Matildas – we saw the game today in Leverkusen and are on our way to Bavarian Augsburg for Sunday’s game against either Sweden or the US girls. Compared to the socceroos efforts last year in South Africa this performance is much superior and full of joy for the game. A young team made in heaven.

Keep on waltzing Matildas, you are doing us all proud here in Germany.

It was a moving moment when our four aboriginal artists from Down Under started to sing with Robyn from artkelch a song to say thank you for a couple of exciting weeks in Stuttgart and Freiburg.

Aboriginal art explained, this was a major moto for these weeks, many hundred viewers fell in love with the oldest type of art brought to them from Down Under.

Wir könnten keine bessere Begleitung für die vergangenen zwei Tage haben, denn wir haben in Freiburg einen ganz einzigartigen Besuch von vier australischen Künstlern erlebt, welche mit ihrer Kunst und mit ihrer Natürlich- und Herzlichkeit alle Anwesenden begeisterten.

Die australische Regierung unterstütze den Besuch der vier Superstars aus dem nordwestlichen Zipfel Südaustraliens in den deutschen Sommer, die auf Aboriginal Kunst spezialisierte Galerie Artkelch hatte eingeladen und mit diversen Veranstaltungen innerhalb von zwei Wochen Künstler und deren Art-Centre-Manager durch Süddeutschland geführt.

Keine Frage, da durfte auch australischer Wein nicht fehlen, am Freitagabend gepaart mit australischem Bier und einem zünftigen BBQ.

Unvergesslich war es – smile because it happened – four Australian Aboriginal Artists in the midst of Freiburg, dancing their way with all smiles happening around them.

Sauvignon Blanc aus Neuseeland

Die DWWA-Ergebnisse, die auf der London International Wine Fair bekannt gegeben wurden, zeigten, dass 77% aller Sauvignon-Blanc-Weine, die von Neuseelands hervorragenden Weingütern eingereicht wurden, mit einem erfolgreichen Ergebnis davon kamen.

Nach einem turbulenten Jahr repräsentieren diese Ergebnisse eine wirklich gelungene Bestätigung für die neuseeländische Weinindustrie, nachdem Erdbeben und Tornados schwere Verwüstungen in einigen Gebieten nahe der besten Weingüter des Landes anrichteten. Doch Neuseeland schnitt nicht nur in der Sauvignon-Blanc-Kategorie gut ab, sondern gewann ebenfalls in anderen Kategorien weitere 260 Auszeichnungen, wobei 82% aller von Neuseeland eingereichten Weine Anerkennung erhielten. Die Pinot Noirs hatten es den Juroren besonders angetan.

Und wie schnitten die weiteren Gebiete in Euopa ab? Traditionelle französische Anbaugebiete für Sauvignon Blanc beeindruckten weiterhin mit Weinen aus Pouilly-Fumé und Sancerre, die hohes Lob von der Jury erhielten. Österreich, Italien und Slovenien gewannen ebenfalls Medaillen für ihre Sauvignon-Blanc-Weine.

Zu den anderen Ländern der Neuen Welt, die für ihre Sauvignon Blancs in dieser hart umkämpften Kategorie dieser äußerst beliebten Traube Auszeichnungen erhielten, gehören Australien, Südafrika und Chile.

Steven Spurrier, der Vorsitzende des Decanters-Wettbewerb glaubt, dass die hohe Anzahl der Nominierungen dem Ansehen und dem Ruf der Auszeichnungen zu verdanken ist, wozu er verlautete: “Wir sind von der Anzahl der diesjährigen Einreichungen für den Wettbewerb schwer beeindruckt. Das ist ein klarer Beweis dafür, wie der Ruf von Decanters weltweit respektiert und anerkannt wird und welche Bedeutung diesen Auszeichnungen zuteil wird. Wir erweitern weiterhin unsere Beziehungen mit Weinliebhabern, -produzenten und -händlern aus der ganzen Welt.”

The Decanter World Wine Awards were announced on Tuesday 17th of May at the Decanter stand (K-10) at the London International Wine Fair.

New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs, that received a major trophy this year were:
Vavasour, Sauvignon Blanc, Awatere Valley, Marlborough 2010 (Regional Trophy: above 10 £)
Waimea Estates, Sauvignon Blanc, Nelson 2010 (Regional Trophy under 10 £)

In dieser Woche bereisen alle internationalen Gewinner der Scholarships des australischen Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) Diploma die Weinregion Adelaide Hills und sprechen dort mit den Winzern und Mitarbeitern, um sich vor Ort über die einzelnen Praktiken schlau zu machen.

Die Besuchergruppe beinhaltet Nachwuchskräfte aus England, Irland, weiteren Teilen Europas, Nordamerika, und Asien. Zusätzlich sind zwei Studenten aus China und Nordasien dabei.

Aus unserer Sicht ist das ein weiteres Beispiel dafür, wie eine Weinregion und damit einher ein ganzes Weinland frühzeitig versucht, angehende Weinexperten aus der ganzen Welt an sich zu binden. Zukünftige Exportmöglichkeiten, aber auch die Erklärung spezifischer Traubenverarbeitung und Arbeit in der Winery stehen dabei auf der Tagesordnung. Wir wünschen allen Beteiligten viel Spaß bei den diversen Besuchen in den kommenden Tagen.

The Adelaide Hills wine community will be in the spotlight this week, with a group of international wine scholars travelling to the region to immerse themselves in the local wine sector.

The group – all scholarship winners from the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) Diploma – are in Australia as part of Wine Australia’s commitment to global wine education. The scholarships provide an opportunity for students to learn more about the Australian wine industry with and have been awarded to top-scoring students from UK,Ireland, other parts of Europe, North America and Asia-Pacific who took part in the Diploma. In addition, two students from China/Hong Kong/Macau and north-east Asia who undertook the Advanced Certificate were also awarded the scholarship via an application process.

Wine Australia has worked with WSET to award the scholarships since 2007, with the aim of increasing Australia’s wine presence among educators, trade, retail and media in key export markets. The winners’ backgrounds include marketing, education, importing, media, winemaking and wine retail and they will visit a variety of Australian wine regions in Victoria, NSW and South Australia.

Asiatische Weintrinker aus China testen australische Weine

It’s time for us to launch our 2011 Wine Road Show in China. We will start from Guangzhou International Wine & Spirit Expo from 26th to 28th June and then Changshan, Zhengzhou and Nanning from 29th June to 4th July.
 
It is to be noted that only one package and no options for cities exist. If more than one booth is needed at the Guangzhou expo, an additional A$2200 will be charged.

Taste of Australia was developed by Austrade to link Australian wineries with targeted, local business networks. By working with Austrade the winemakers meet local importers, distributors, traders, corporate buyers, as well as hotel and restaurant owners in the region.

Since 2008 Taste of Australia wine road shows have been well received by participants, with many exhibitors making this an annual event for their business. In excess of 100 market professionals attended each of the regional city Taste of Australia events and 90% of Australian participants made quality business leads as a direct result of their involvement in the road show.

This year’s road show coincides with the 2011 Guangdong International Wine & Spirit Expo held in Guangzhou which attracts local importers, distributors, traders, corporate buyers, and hotel/restaurant owners from the Southern China region. Immediately following the expo, a three city road show will begin, focussing on the cities of: Changsha, Zhengzhou & Nanning, enabling Australian exporters and their distributors to maximise their China market visit investment.
