Drei Rotweine aus South Australia im Test

Der Heartland Shiraz aus dem Jahre 2006 stammt von der Limestone Coast, keine 30 Minuten südlich von Adelaide an der Küste gelegen. Er ist kreiert von niemand weniger als Ben Glaetzer. Seine tiefrote, dunkle Farbe, die Nase nach Schokolade, Pfeffer und etwas Tabak und die reifen Pflaumen, Waldbeeren und Gewürze im Gaumen machen diesen Heartland zu einem typischen Australier, einem Shiraz eben. Dieser Wein ist ideal zu Fleisch, insbesondere zu Gegrilltem und kann noch weitere 5 Jahre gelagert werden.

Der Katherine Hills Rotwein, ebenfalls aus 2006, ist ein Shiraz Cabernet aus South Australia – also eine Kombination der vielleicht bekanntesten beiden Rebsorten Australiens. Aus dem McLaren Vale von Beresford Wines als Einstiegswein geschaffen, macht der Rotwein in diesem Test eine gute Figur, wenn ihm auch der wirkliche Tiefgang fehlt. Seine weichen Beerennoten und der Holzton, bedingt durch eine kurze Lagerung in Eichenfässern lässt den Katherine Hills als einen sehr typischen Vertreter Australiens darstehen.

Komplettieren tut dieses Bild der Glaetzer Wallace Shiraz aus dem Barossa Valley, aus dem Jahr 2004 und somit bereits zwei Jahre länger in der Flasche, als die beiden anderen Roten. Dieser Wein stammt direkt aus dem Weingut Ben Glaetzers und wurde von seinem Bruder Robin kreiert, der Name Wallace ist der Mädchenname dessen Frau. Der reife und volle Shiraz dominiert und gibt die Fülle, die dieser Wein zu bieten hat. Vom Grenache stammen die Kirscharomen und die erdigen Grundtöne des Weines. Vierzehn Monate hat dieser Wein in französischen und amerikanischen Eichenfässern verbracht, Glaetzer hat ihm eine feine Eleganz mit auf den Weg gegeben. Er ist ein toller Wein für den heutigen Genuss, doch wer es aushält, der legt diesen Tropfen für ein paar Jahre in den Keller, denn dann wird er optimal für den Abend am Kaminfeuer sein.

Tja, und welchen dieser drei Roten empfinden wir für den heutigen Genuss als den Besten? Das ist schwer zu sagen, denn zu eigen sind die diversen Rebsortenkombinationen.

Wir entscheiden uns letztlich für den Glaetzer Wallace Shiraz Grenache, er ist der ausgewogenste und gleichzeitig interessanteste Vertreter der drei Weine. Es ist dieser typisch australische Geschmack nach Waldbeeren und Schokolade sowie diese wunderbare Länge und bei diesem Wallace halt auch seine zwei Jahre, die der Wein bereits länger in der Flasche verbracht hat. Der Wallace ist die paar Euro Investment pro Flasche wert, für uns ist das keine Frage.

Alle drei Weine aus South Australia sind erhältlich in Europa bei Vivinum, als Einzelflaschen oder in der Mixed Bag.

Nein, ich finde, dass Magnums auch immer etwas Besonderes haben. Als Gastgeschenk immer willkommen, für Gäste im eigenen Hause eine besondere Aufmerksamkeit – ich habe noch niemals schlechte Erfahrungen mit einer roten Magnumflasche gemacht.

Rotwein in der 0,25l Flasche aus South Australia

Doch wie ist es mit den kleinen Flaschen gestellt: 0,375l oder gar die 0,25l Flaschen sind international auf dem Vormarsch. Während meine Großmutter früher, als sie noch lebte, des Abends gern den Pikkolo hervorholte, wohl gemerkt, an den besonderen Tagen, so erleben wir heute einen Boom der kleinen Flaschen.

In der Gastronomie schon immer gern gesehen, in Hotels in Minibars und nun auch in den Weinhandlungen für die zunehmend singulären Haushalte: die Kleinen sind fast schon Kult.

Doch was die Qualität der Weine angeht, da bin ich nicht immer überzeugt. Unser Foto zeigt einen Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz in der praktischen 0,25l Flasche. Das Preisschild habe ich bewusst nicht abgebildet: der Preis in einem deutschen Supermarkt war herabgesetzt von 5 € auf 79 Cent – die 2. Flasche, welche ich probierte, offenbarte dann geschmacklich Entsprechendes…

Dennoch glaube ich an das Wachstum dieser kleinen Flaschen, wir werden von den guten Tropfen in dieser Größenordnung weiter berichten, um Ihnen eine gewisse Guideline für den entsprechenden Genuss zu geben.

Does size matter? At least when it comes to wine bottles in any case: Magnums or even larger bottles really catch the eye of the holder. Although we currently experience a renaissance of small wine bottles of 0.375l and 0.25l sizes in Europe. Und das Schöne in diesem Jahr ist, dass die deutsche und die australische Mannschaft direkt im ersten Gruppenspiel aufeinander treffen. Mit dieser Auslosung haben wir bereits im ersten Spiel einen absoluten Highlight aus Sicht von Downunder Wines – treffen doch hier das Herkunftsland unserer Weine und das Land unseres Absatzes aufeinander.

Unsere deutschen Freunde sind optimistisch, die Tipps reichen von 2:0 bis hin zu 4:1 für Deutschland – kein einziger deutscher Freund tippt für die Socceroos.

Doch auch wir sind bereit: wir haben unsere Autos heraus geputzt und sind wahrscheinlich die Einzigen in Deutschland, die mit deutschen Fahnen am Fenster und australischen Fahnen im Heck durch dieses Land fahren. Und insgeheim wünsche ich den Aussies ein Unentschieden – Kewell zum 1:1 in der 89. Minute. Das ist zumindest mein Tipp. Too easy mate!

We are ready for this soccer world cup, well our Australian friends (including my second daughter) call it soccer, for me this is still football.

Our emotions are between the two countries playing on Sunday night. A dream final if you ask me but let us start this weekend in our group D to see how the Aussie Socceroos can face the German football team. A draw, that would be my favourite score.

So geschehen am vergangenen Freitag, als eine Lieferung von Testweinen der Galafrey Wines von Mount Barker in Western Australia eintraf. Auch hier gilt wieder: erst müssen die Weine für ein paar Tage zur ‘Beruhigung’ in den Weinkeller, erst dann werden sie zwecks Test geöffnet.

Dieser Job ist ein wirklich harter – auch wenn mich meine Bekannten in dieser Hinsicht nicht richtig verstehen wollen …

This Video shows the unwrapping of six bottles of wine from Western Australian producer Galafrey Wines.

Galafrey is situated at Mount Barker, right on the southern coastline of Western Australia. Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay are the standouts, though I am looking forward to taste the 2004 Shiraz as well.

Thanks Kim for sending us these samples, they will get their deserved rest for a few days before being tasted.

Silja ist gerade einmal 24 Jahre alt, hat ihre Hotelfach- und Sommelierausbildung in Deutschland und Frankreich absolviert und schwärmt von australischen Rotweinen.

Ein 1994 Cabernet Sauvignon aus dem South Australian Connawarra hat es ihr besonders angetan. Der John Riddoch von Wynns Connawarra Estate ist ein sensationeller Wein, er ist nur acht Jahre jünger als meine Gesprächspartnerin und wird von den Top 1% der Cabernet Sauvignon Trauben bei Wynns produziert.

Der tief dunkelrote Wein zeigt sofort seine kräftigen Aromen von Wildbeeren, Schokolade und Minze, um den Vergleich nach Frankreich zu führen, so hatte ich den Eindruck einen Cassis zu riechen. Der vollmundige Wein mit einem starken, langen sehr weichen Abgang war mit seinen 16 Jahren in einem erstklassigen Zustand.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Silja Schmid, young sommeliere in South Bavaria, last week.

She raved about the 1994 John Riddoch Cab Sav from Wynns Connawarra Estate. They claim, that the John Riddoch is the definitive Cabernet Sauvignon of Wynns Coonawarra Estate – produced from the top 1% of available Cabernet Sauvignon grapes and then only in the years when grapes of extraordinarily high quality are available. A great wine, even after 16 years – we decantered the bottle and filtered it, as the cork completely broke when openening the bottle.

A very dark colour with a rich, ripe and complex bouquet present a voluptuous infusion of red berry, chocolate, mint, and cassis-like Cabernet aromas merging with lifted, spicy new oak. The wine came along as full-bodied with persistent and mouth-filling ripe berry flavour and excellent structure. I have to admit, that this Cab Sav was a real highlight for this evening.

Global wines use screwcaps

Der chilenische Montes Cabernet Sauvignon und Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz wurden bei einer hochdotierten Veranstaltung in Sydney serviert, beide Weine unter screwcap – das ist für den aufgeschlossenen Weintrinker hier Down Under kein Imageproblem.

Und ganz nebenbei ist es sehr viel einfacher, die Flasche zu öffnen, keine lästige Suche nach einem Korkenzieher.

I came across these two wines at a pretty serious social gathering in Sydney last week. Both wines, the Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz and the Montes Cab Sav from Chile have one thing in common:

they are both ‘wearing’ a screwcap – good on them – here in Australia people care about the wine and love the convenience of a screwcap closure. Too easy mate!

Vintage 2002 South Australian Cabernet Sauvignon/ Shiraz

Autumn is coming on. A cold and rainy day in Hamburg (Germany), the trees have withered leaves in yellow and red.

It’s very comfortable in our heated apartment. A variety of aged French cheese on the table is waiting for consumption. I open a bottle of vintage 2002 South Australian Cabernet Sauvignon/Shiraz from Tatachilla Partners, a not overpriced winery that is located in McLaren Vale.

Great stuff! Rich, vibrant blackberry and plum fruit flavors are well integrated with spicy oak characters. It fits perfectly to our aged cheese – and the weather outside. In Germany it’s not easy to buy ambitious Australian reds for reasonable prices because of limited offers.

Glad I have this one – a very good choice!

Kiama Wine Show 2009

No one so far could explain to me, how wines from 700m cool climate Highlands could be compared to wines from a distinctly different climate at the South Coast in a regional show- but here you go: the mission for the judging panel was ‘make this judging work on the basis, that the wines compare on distinct ‘international wine levels”.

The results are a repeat of former years and a few big surprises to me- firstly the repeat: Coolangatta Estate won best White Wine with their 2001 Estate Semillon, a great wine without any doubt and for sure one of the outstanding Semillons in the country. Good to have a Hunter Valley expert in Keith Tulloch (his Keith Tulloch Wines are Hunter based) confirm the success of Coolangatta’s flagship again. Owner Greg Bishop was very contempt with its Semillons, he even confirmed to me that the years 2005 and 2006 looked even more promising but needed more time to develop.

The surprises came with the awards for two categories I was having a close eye on: best Red Wine and also Best Wine of the show was awarded to Southern Highlands Wines with their Cabernet Sauvignon and best Pinot Noir was scored by the 2008 Centennial Wines Pinot Noir. I tasted both of them and these results were very much to my surprise to put it mildly. I tasted at least three Pinots at the show that were far superior and had no faults.

The Centennial Pinot tasted foul, even faulty – to its credit the bottle was open for 24 hours when I tried it. Still, a wine under screwcap must hold onto its credentials for more than 24 hours. This Pinot was one I would have not cared to finish the bottle – even if I had bought it myself.

And taking into account, that the judges were asked to apply international standards in this regional show, I have no understanding for the decision to award best red wine (and best wine of the show) to a Cabernet Sauvignon from the Southern Highlands. There is simply no good Cab Sav from this region, most serious winemakers actually pull the plug on this variety these days as the Highland’s climate simply doesn’t work for Cab Savs.

To award a gold medal to the Cabernet Sauvignon from Southern Highlands Wines is an absolute disgrace for all Cab Savs from Coonawarra, McLaren Vale or Barossa, that scored less in other shows. These judges must have smoked good stuff when they made this call, sorry guys.

But this is wine judging in Australia – sometimes you have to ask yourself how these results come up. Let me put one thing straight: my opinion of no good Cab Sav from the Southern Highlands stands and if this particular winery uses grapes from other regions, than this wine shouldn’t have been entered in the regional show. A good judge should figure this out.

In der letzten Woche war ich endlich einmal auf einer der vielen kleineren, regionalen Weinshows zu Besuch. Die regionale Wine Show in Kiama brachte in diesem Jahr neben einem wiederholten weissen Gewinner zwei dicke Ueberraschungen als bestem Wein der Show und bestem Pinot Noir. Jene beiden Entscheidungen lassen mich diese regionale Show eher ein wenig belaecheln, einer der Wine Makers vor Ort urteilte: well, there is another show next week. Den Besuch in Kiama werde ich mir naechstes Jahr allerdings schenken.

Radio ads lead us to the latest bargain at a cellar door

So this is what they mean when they talk on the radio about how ‘radio advertisement works’ – I suspect everyone in Australia has heard the advertisement of Commercial Radio Australia for its own capability to make ads work (their latest slogan being: radio advertisement – economically sound).

I experienced the simple truth of this fact when 80% of the mostly new visitors to this winery claimed, they had heard the spot on the radio. Which spot I asked, as I currently listen to a Mozart CD in my car and therefore avoid commercial radio’s inundating commercial breaks this way. I realised that my selfish behaviour might have made me miss out on the hottest news in the Highlands this week and only pure luck brought me to the place where all the action was taking place!

The cellar door manager informed me that they announced the sale of Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlots at $3.00 per bottle – vintages being their 2003 and 2004 ones. Here we are – the old Australian habit to love a bargain was happening right in front of my eyes. Highlights of these two hours were a Mercedes S-class from the Northern beaches in Sydney and various BMW four wheel drivers – all these guys hunting for the cases with $3.00 wines. Well, you can’t buy an S-class when you spend all your money on Penfolds Grange bottles, do you?

On the other hand, one customer told me: this is cheaper than buying your daily red at larger bottle shops such as Dan Murphy’s – and the wine is definitely better – this is for sure.

Australier lieben ein Schnaeppchen, so geschehen gestern nachmittag, als ich viele Schnaeppchenjaeger in eine Cellar Door hereinstuermen sah – und das an einer Cellar Door, die viele Kilometer ausserhalb der Kleinstaedte hier in den Southern Highlands liegt. Ein Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot ist dort fuer $3.00 die Flasche zu haben – im Dutzend – und die Jaeger stroemten nur so hinein. Grosser Unterschied zu den $3.00 Australiern in deutschen Supermaerkten ist, dass dieser Tropfen hier richtig gut schmeckt, kein grand cru classe – aber immerhin.
