Vor einem Jahrhundert waren die Rieslinge aus Deutschland noch die teuersten Weine auf den Weinkarten der Restaurants und Hotels wie dem Adlon in Berlin oder dem St. James in London. Dann ein wenig in der Versenkung verschwunden tauchen sie jetzt wieder auf, so auch in Australien – und ganz schön heftig:

Ich erhielt jüngst eine Einladung zu einem Tasting in Sydney bei Annandale Cellars, die Inhaber sind recht rürig, wenn es um die Verkostung von Weinen aus aller Welt geht. Ziemlich überrascht war ich jedoch, als ich die Liste der Rieslinge sah, die am kommenden Samstag zur Verkostung anstehen, das liest sich wie das Who is Who der globalen Riesling Erzeuger.

Allein die Liste der deutschen Riesling Winzer ist beachtlich und qualitativ erstklassig, Van Volxem und Haart hatten wir ja jüngst auch bei 52weine im Programm, das ist die Champions League der Rieslingmacher von der Mosel.

Wir sagen herzlichen Glückwunsch, doch wo waren die J.J. Prüms, Kesselstadts oder van Volxems bei diesem Wettbewerb? Keine Zeit für Australien oder fürchtete man den anderen Geschmack für Rieslinge auf dem fünften Kontinent? Deutschlands Größen meiden noch den Wettbewerb mit den Rieslingen Down Under – das mag sich jedoch in den nächsten Jahren ändern.

Deutscher Riesling chancenlos in Canberra Challenge

Neil Paulett is the proudest winemaker in Australia after bringing home four individual trophies for his 2005 Aged Release Polish Hill River Riesling at the 11th Canberra International Riesling Challenge last week.

Amongst some of the World’s finest examples of the variety, the 2005 Paulett’s Aged Release Riesling beat all comers winning Best Australian Museum Class, Best Dry Riesling in the World, Best Riesling in Australia and the competition’s highest award, Best Riesling in the World.

Accepting his swag of trophies at the Gala Awards Dinner last Friday night Neil, with his wife Alison, celebrated the biggest win in their boutique winery’s 27-year history.

“The whole experience was a bit surreal to be honest, the first one was a great surprise, I said a few words and thought that would be it for the night. Then they called me up for the second one and I thought ‘how good is this?’ When they called me a third time I must admit I started to get the shakes, it was absolutely incredible.

“The fourth trophy for Best Riesling in the World just blew me away, I literally couldn’t speak.
“On the night of the awards we tasted many of the other trophy wines. That’s when it really sunk in, it’s quite humbling to have been recognised against our peers, such fantastic Riesling makers from around the world.”

A proud family owned and operated winery, tucked away in the Polish Hill River sub-region of the Clare Valley, Paulett’s has always maintained a quietly confident attitude towards producing regionally distinctive wines of finesse, elegance and intensity. “We’ve never worried too much about what other people do, we have great vineyards and we just make great wines with the grapes we have.
“We’re lucky here in Clare though. When we got home we had messages with a pat on the back from a couple of our neighbours who’ve won the same trophy and from many of our winemaking peers and the general community, it’s wonderful to have their support.

“Clare does produce fantastic Rieslings, of course they’re different to a European style but so they should be, we’re not Europeans. “If this award gets a few new people trying aged Rieslings then it’s a good thing. “Riesling is like a person, when it’s young it’s bright, full of life and energetic but when they get older, like me, they get a bit softer and rounder, develop great character and complexity.”

German Riesling in Canberra Challenge

Diese Rekordanzahl zeigt, welch wachsenden Stellenwert Riesling in Australien geniesst, so Ken Helm, Chef der Veranstaltung und selbst ein Spitzenwinzer aus der Region Canberra selbst. Die Teilnehmer kommen neben Australien aus Deutschland, Tschechien, Südafrika, Chile und den USA.

Der Startschuss für die Veranstaltung fällt am 16. September, einen Monat lang gibt es diverse Aktivitäten rund um das Thema Riesling und die Preise werden dann Mitte Oktober in einem festlichen Gala Dinner in der Hauptstadt vergeben.

Ein guter Event, um die Rebsorte Riesling Down Under weiter zu vermarkten, mal schauen, wer die Trophies in den sieben unterschiedlichen Kategorien gewinnt.

The Canberra International Riesling Challenge (CIRC) has attracted a record number of Australian entries for 2010. Ken Helm AM, Chair of CIRC, said he is delighted with the 364 Australian entries received this year, up from 352 in 2009. “The record number of Australian entries for this year’s Challenge demonstrates the increased popularity that Riesling is enjoying in Australia,” Mr Helm said.

The introduction of two new trophies, the Best Dry Riesling in the World and the Best Sweet Riesling in the World, acknowledges the increasing versatility of Riesling – with seven different styles now being produced. With the judging being conducted on a regional basis, this allows the individual characteristics of each region’s wine to be highlighted – a feature unique to the Canberra International Riesling Challenge .

Grosset Riesling Clare Valley

“Also: Ich habe den Riesling von Polish Hill aus dem Jahre 2008 probiert und ihn als sehr fruchtig empfunden.

Er hat einen vollen, frischen Geschmack, ist aber für meinen Geschmack noch zu jung. Er hat im Abgang einfach noch deutlich zu viel Säure. Da er aber einen sehr reinen Eindruck macht, dürfte sich im Alter von sieben Jahren ein wunderbarer fruchtiger Geschmack entwickelt haben, der dann auch von der Säure nicht mehr gestört wird.

Nach meinen Erfahrungen wird bei Weißwein dieser Güte die Säure nach sieben Jahren zu einem noch fruchtigeren und vollmundigeren Geschmack verwandelt. Der typische Charakter des Polish Hill ist aber schon erkennbar: Er hat eine kräftige Grundlage und wirkt für mich ein wenig wie im Eichenfass gereift.

We had a report on the Riesling from Jeffrey Grosset a few months ago, the wine has a certain cult status in Australia thanks to its uniqueness and the very few bottles available. Here is what we thought.

Doch halt: bitte fangen Sie jetzt nicht an zu denken, ich wolle unseren Downunder Wines Blog auf deutsche Weine umstellen! Weit gefehlt! Denn die australische Antwort auf die deutschen Spitzenrieslinge kommt aus South Australia, genauer gesagt dem Clare Valley.

Grosset Polish Hill Riesling

Die dortigen Rieslinge von Grosset sind absolute Kultweine in Australien. “Australia’s greatest maker of Riesling,” beschrieb schon James Halliday die Weine von Jeffrey Grosset. Der Decanter kürte ihn im letzten Jahr gemeinsam mit seiner Partnerin Stephanie Toole (von Mount Horrocks Wines) zu einem der weltweit ‘Famous Five Power Couples’ der Weinindustrie.

Die verfügbare Anzahl der Flaschen ist stark begrenzt, die Jahresproduktion des Weingutes umfasst ungefähr 9.500 Dutzend Flaschen. Nicht viel für einen sowohl in Australien, als auch international so erfolgreichen Winzer.

So musste ich vor wenigen Tagen lernen, dass ich nur noch ganze sechs Flaschen des 2008 Polish Hill Rieslings in Deutschland käuflich erwerben konnte. Ein Wein, dessen frühere Jahrgänge ich bereits in Australien probierte. Dieses Restkontingent Deutschlands steht jetzt in meinem Weinkeller und mir läuft bei seinem Anblick das Wasser im Munde zusammen.

Ich werde einen ausführlichen Testbericht zu dem Polish Hill in den kommenden Tagen schreiben, soviel vorweg: es bedarf schon eines besonderen Anlasses, um eine der letzten Flaschen Deutschlands von diesem Tropfen zu öffnen.

On my recent travels throughout Germany’s top wine regions focusing on Riesling, I started to think how tough it must be, to compete with this true ‘German grape’ as a wine from Down Under.

It didn’t take me long to come up with a great Australian match, Grosset’s Polish Hill Rieslings are what the new MW classification of Australian wines, like Langtons classification calls ‘the epitome of Australian Riesling’. A true superstar from Clare Valley.

I was able to purchase the last six bottles available in the whole of Germany from its 2008 year, 2009 will hit the shores of Germany later in summer this year. The current bottles are now safely stored in my wine cellar, it takes a real occasion to make me open one of these.

So we’ll have to wait for a tasting report, sorry guys, but I promise: it is worth the wait.

“I have been a big fan of Sauvignon Blancs in the past years, both from New Zealand and Australia. But I am over them now – the usually high levels of acidity and lack of distinct palate are turning me off now. I’d rather prefer Rieslings these days, this one here shows more delicate fruit flavours and is simply more interesting.”

In unserer Serie ‘My Drink Today’ berichtet uns Shane aus High Range in NSW über ihren Wein, einen 2005 Tertini Riesling aus den Southern Highlands. Shane war bis vor kurzem ein grosser Sauvignon Blanc Fan. Ihr Geschmack hat sich aber in den vergangenen Monaten davon weg entwickelt, hin zu interessanteren und eher komplexen Trauben wie etwa Riesling.

Heute abend geniesse ich einen Riesling aus der Orange Region – der cool climate Gegend im Westen von NSW. Der Wein gehoert zur Reihe der ‘Word of Mouth’ Weine, einer Familien geführter Winery, die auf ca. 1.000 Meter Höhe ihre Weine anbaut.

Seine Farbe ist leicht grün, das Aroma eröffnet einen leichten Zitrusduft und sein Säuregehalt und langer Abgang zeigen von einem sehr gepflegtem Wein, der über viele Jahre hinweg in ihrem Keller lagern kann. Füer die nächsten 10 Jahre können Sie diesen Wein kellern – ich bezweifele, dass der Wein das so lange in ihrem Keller schafft.

Riesling from Orange Australia

Australian Riesling has come a long way – there are quite a few regions, which produce Riesling wines that can compete with the recently re-born German grands.

I tried a Word of Mouth Riesling the other day, with another great season and slightly cooler than 2008, the winery produced an outstanding wine. Light straw green, this wine has delicately perfumed talc and fresh cut lime aromas.

I enjoyed the taste of lime juice on the palate. Finishing long and clean with the perfect balance of acidity and the barest hint of sweetness.

Asking the winemaker about its aging potential I received the answer, that the Riesling has a potential to develop richer honeyed notes as it matures. They even recommend it to drink now to 2019.

Not sure whether I can wait this long.

Wine week in Orange

Orange winemakers claim to make wine that people like to drink, this is at least the comment I get most when travelling through the region and visiting its many cellar doors.

Orange is considered cool climate with an altitude from 600m to about 1,000 metres and the night temperatures dropping to quite pleasant levels even in the sometimes extremely warm summer months.

Don’t even try to call your wines from ‘Orange’ if your grapes grow under 600m altitude. The ‘climbing’ and ‘rolling hills’ story of Cumulus wines confirms this story nicely, we’ll report on this in a separate post.

Rain closing in

But the local winemakers also claim that the soil plays a major role too: there is the volcanic basalt of the old volcano on Canobolas (the views frrom there are the more impressive when rain is in sight) or the red-brown clay in some other parts, the Orange region provides very rich and fertile grounds for the vines to thrive on.

Winemakers such as Philip Shaw with his Koomooloo Vineyard, the famous Printhie Wines with winemaker Drew Tuckwell or Stephen and Rhonda Doyle as two of the pioneers of the Orange wine region: they all came to produce outstanding wines and their highlights so far have been their whites: Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc. The latter is claimed in Orange’s prospectus for the wine week as ‘the hero variety with international recognition’.

I will check out on this in the coming days, as our spring family holiday leads us to this wine region – so far pretty undiscovered by myself. I am also told to watch out for the cool climate stars Pinot Noir and Shiraz – well it will be a pleasure to start the discovery.

The time is ripe, as James Halliday’s guide descibes the 2009 vintage from Orange as ‘a memorable vintage for some, especially reds: whites good with volumes down 10%’. Let’s see what the next days bring.

Cool climate vineyard

Internationally known are the classic wine regions such as the Barossa and Yarra Valley or McLaren Vale. Our aim here at downunderwines is to introduce to you a number of smaller and mostly newer regions over the coming months. Let us start with a region that was officially established on 23 January 2008 – the New England Wine Region.

This region is an inland district in northern New South Wales, situated at the top of the Great Dividing Range. It has a mild alpine climate and four distinct seasons. The winemakers are still trying to find out, which varieties will be most successful, however, the typical cool climate varieties seem to be doing well, such as Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Noir as well as Riesling.

Although officially only a bit more than a year old, the area is in fact a re-emerging wine region as early settlers planted their own wine already in the 1850s. Between 1870 and 1920 wines from New England won quite a few awards at wine shows in Sydney, London, the US and France.

What is fascinating is the climate of this large region, obviously strongly influenced by its elevation. It ranges from 404m in and around Tamworth to the New England Plateau where vineyards grow at 900m around Glenn Innes in the Great Dividing Range. High altitude, cooler nights, snow in winter and still only two hours inland from the sub-tropical north coast of NSW.

It will be interesting to see, how winemakers in these new areas will try to distinguish themselves from the bigger and better known regions. One of the suggested differentiators will be the use of new, almost unique varieties such as Arneis, Gewurztraminer or Tempranillo.

This week we have tried a wine from Topper’s Mountain Wines – a winery with first plantings from 2000 and 2002. They are trying out quite a few new varieties and we opted for the 2005 topper’s Mountain Traminer – a Gewurztraminer following a truly traditional German style. Typical for this style is the toastal floral aroma of Jasmine. The scent of Turkish Delight makes Michael think of his home country Germany, the wine itself lacks a bit in length which shows that this is a wine that will need a few more years of work.

Gewurztraminer is a difficult variety but has the potential to be outstanding in a few years time and therefore become a good differentiation for Topper Mountain Wines. And this is what wine from Australia is also about: having a go at new varieties in new regions.
