Der Nr. 1 Rotwein in Australien diese Weihnacht mit dem Christmas Turkey: Pinot Noir
“…Pinot Noir produces the most complex, hedonistic, and remarkably thrilling red wine in the world!” says Robert Parker, a statement that Jim Lumbers, owner of Lerida Estate, whole-heartedly agrees with – especially when matched with his Christmas turkey.
Pinot Noir from Canberra District
It was Jim’s love of Pinot Noir that saw him spend many days in the vineyards of Burgundy while living in France in the late 80’s, and prompted him to try the Pinot Noir wines of Dr Edgar Riek, one of the pioneers of the Canberra District wine region, on his return to Australia. This tasting bought him to the Lake George region of the Canberra District in 1997 to track down what he described as “some of the most outstanding Pinot Noirs I’d ever tried”.
As a result, Jim and his wife Anne Caine purchased a 40 acre plot of land nestled at the bottom of the Cullerin Range, overlooking the beautiful and mysterious Lake George – perfect for planting Pinot Noir.
According to Jim, “The terrior here is ideal; Pinot needs sunshine without excessive heat, dry air, deep soil and cool nights, and the gravelly, colluvial soil at the foot of the Range provides all of this. These conditions encourage deep-rooted, healthy vines with enough stress to favour the production of grapes with thick skins, excellent fruit flavours and high levels of anti-ageing polyphenols. The slopes face east, allowing the rising sun to dry out any dew, and so reduce the impact of moulds and mildews. The steepness of the slopes also contributes to vine health by promoting good air drainage and reducing the risk of frost damage during the growing season.”
Pinot Noir from Lake George
The newly released Lerida Estate 2009 ‘Cullerin’ Pinot Noir, Canberra District follows the highly successful 2008 ‘Cullerin’ Pinot Noir which received excellent scores from both wine critics and wine shows alike. Jim says, “The 2009 vintage was crafted to achieve a balance between a fruit driven style, and more texture and weight. In particular the aroma of the new 2009 is very evocative with stewed plums, rhubarb and spice, mixed with gamey and savoury overtones, and a hint of vanilla from 20% new oak barrel.” Whilst the 2009 is still young, if decanted before tasting you will discover that the wine already delivers the flavours to match its fine, silky tannins and body, and experience with previous vintages indicates that the wine will also improve over the next 8-10 years.”

Fragt man die Winzer in Australien, so war die Nummer 1 unter den Weinen für den klassichen ‘Christmas Turkey’ der Pinot Noir. Keine andere Rebsorte passt so hervorragend zu diesem typischen australischen Weihnachtsgericht.
Wir dürfen nicht vergessen, es ist Sommer Down Under und in den Küchen werden bei 35-40 Grad Celsius gane Kämpfe zwischen Herd und Hitze (von außen) gefochten. Pete geniesst einen Galafrey unoaked Chardonnay aus Western Australia
Heute bringen wir Ihnen einen Bericht über unseren Bekannten Pete aus den Southern Highlands. Er bereist derzeit Europa und testete bei uns einen Galafrey Weisswein, einen Mount Barker Unoaked Chardonnay 2009. Dieser Wein hat bei Halliday gerade 90 Punkte erhalten, für einen ‘unoaked’ ist das geradezu ein sensationelles Ergebnis.

Der Wein ist ein atypischer Chardonnay für Western Australia, denn er ist zurückhaltend und ohne das sonst so überbetonte Geschmacksmuster der Chardonnays. Der unoaked von Galafrey zeigt sehr schöne Aromen von Grapefruit und hat eine schöne Länge. Mit 13% ist er sehr angenehm alkoholisiert.
“Wie schön ist es einen solchen Wein an einem herrlichen Spätsommerabend in Bayern zu trinken,” so Pete an diesem Abend. Leider zieht es ihn schon Morgen nach Italien – in Rom wird er ein Motorrad mieten und bis nach ganz unten in Sizilien fahren. Too easy mate.

Heute schreibt uns Andrea W. aus Sonthofen von ihren Erlebnissen mit einem ganz besonderen Weißen aus South Australia, einem Riesling, der in Deutschland so schwer zu finden ist, wie die berühmte Stecknadel im Heuhaufen:
Grosset Riesling Clare Valley
“Also: Ich habe den Riesling von Polish Hill aus dem Jahre 2008 probiert und ihn als sehr fruchtig empfunden.
Er hat einen vollen, frischen Geschmack, ist aber für meinen Geschmack noch zu jung. Er hat im Abgang einfach noch deutlich zu viel Säure. Da er aber einen sehr reinen Eindruck macht, dürfte sich im Alter von sieben Jahren ein wunderbarer fruchtiger Geschmack entwickelt haben, der dann auch von der Säure nicht mehr gestört wird.
Nach meinen Erfahrungen wird bei Weißwein dieser Güte die Säure nach sieben Jahren zu einem noch fruchtigeren und vollmundigeren Geschmack verwandelt. Der typische Charakter des Polish Hill ist aber schon erkennbar: Er hat eine kräftige Grundlage und wirkt für mich ein wenig wie im Eichenfass gereift.

The Polish Hill Riesling from Clare Valley in South Australia is the drink of the day of our reader Andrea from Germany’s South. She loves this wine but prefers the older vintages, as their acidicty seems to be more balanced.

Tri Nations Wine Challenge in Sydney – die Gewinner dürfen nach Hong Kong und Shanghai
Die drei großen Nationen der südlichen Halbkugel Australien, Neuseeland und Südafrika stehen sich in diversen Wettkämpfen alljährlich gegenüber. Der wohl größte Klassiker ist hierbei der Tri Nations Rugby Challenge, für die Australier ist das nach den legendären Wettkämpfen gegen die Engländer der wohl meist beachtete internationale Sportevent.
Arbeit im Weinberg in Geelong
Bei der Fußball WM in RSA waren ja erstmals alle drei Nationen vertreten, wenn auch mit bescheidenem Erfolg. Umso wichtiger ist die im kommenden Monat anstehende Challenge – ein für die hiesige Weinwelt äußerst wichtiger internationaler Wettbewerb: die Tri Nations Wine Challenge in Sydney.
Jedes Jahr wählen drei Juroren die aus ihrer Sicht besten Weine in den jeweiligen Kategorien aus ihrem eigenen Land aus. Jeder selektiert die gleiche Anzahl an Weinen, in manche Kategorien fünf und in anderen sieben Weine. So ensteht eine Testgruppe von 321 Weinen, welche dann vom Admini-strationsteam in Sydney bei den jeweiligen Winzern zur Teilnahme am Event eingeladen wird. Die Einladungen sind in den letzten Tagen bei den Winzern eingetroffen.
In Sydney wird dann in den jeweiligen Flights von 18-30 Weinen getestet, das Ganze nach strengen internationalen Maßstäben. Wichtiger Unterschied zu anderen Weintests ist jedoch, daß in der Tri-Nations tatsächlich mehrere Goldene Medaillen pro Kategorie vergeben werden können. “Wir suchen nach ‘Gewinnern’ in dieser Veranstaltung,” so Chairman Robert Joseph, und wenn tatsächlich mehrere Weine gleich gut sind, “so sollen auch alle diese zu den Gewinnern gehören.”
Wir haben nachgefragt bei Scotchmans Hill Winery in Geelong, an der Küste Viktorias eine Stunde westlich von Melbourne gelegen. Der australische Tester Huon Hooke hat den dortigen 2008 Cornelius Sauvignon Blanc für den Tri-Nations Challenge ausgewählt.
“We are very pleased to announce that our 2008 Cornelius Sauvignon has been selected by Huon Hooke to represent the Geelong wine region at the 2010 Tri-Nations Wine Challenge. Our Sauvignon is about as far away from the frivolous, fresh’n'grassy Sav Blanc style as possible: judicious barrel work and bottle age have contributed deeply satisfying grape-pulpy texture and flavours.” Dieser Kommentar gibt uns eine erste Indikation auf die Intensität des Wettbewerbs, denn dieser hier beschriebene ‘frivole’ Style gilt ja im wesentlichen für die Sauvignon Blancs der kleinen östlichen Nachbarinseln.
Und wer die Aussies und ihren sportlichen Ergeiz kennt, der weiß welchen Stellenwert eine Teilnahme und vielleicht ein Sieg in dieser Tri Nations Challenge hat. Und damit nicht genug: die Top Weine des Challenge werden danach in Hong Kong und Shanghai dem stark wachsenden Chinesischen Markt vorgestellt. Kein schlechtes Incentive, um in Sydney gut abzuschneiden. Wir werden weiter berichten. Go for Gold guys!

Mark Bourne: I suppose the only Cuttaway news, is in spite of the constant media stories about the Australian and World oversupply of wine, it proves that if you are making good wine there is always a demand for it. Against the trend across Australia, in June we are releasing 2010 Sauvignon Blanc, 2010 Semillon Sauvignon Blanc, 2009 Chardonnay, 2009 Pinot Noir all ahead of schedule due to the high demand for our wines. We are simply sold out with the older vintages and need to release the wine ahead of schedule.
downunderwines: We know that one of your big favourites is your Sauvignon Blanc – what is the background to this love story? Wir wissen, dass einer ihrer aboluten Favoriten der Sauvignon Blanc ist, was macht jenen so gut und wie vergleichen Sie ihn im internationalen Vergleich?
Mark Bourne: As far as we can see, we are probably one of the first to release a 2010 unwooded white wine in Australia this year, and the leading white wine by volume last year, at our small family owned estate, is the Sauvignon Blanc. In Australia, where we are constantly flooded with cheap New Zealand Sauvignon blanc, this is indeed a surprising outcome. I think we maybe be able to put it down to offering a different style of Sauvignon Blanc to a market that is looking for something besides the same New Zealand style product vintage after vintage.
Our Sauvignon Blanc has a vibrant green tint colour with gooseberry and herbaceaous aromas combined with a ripe citrus and tropical palate and with a very nicely balanced long crisp finish – that makes this wine an outstanding sample for real Australian Sav Blancs – much less acidic than the SBs from across the Tasman.

Mornington Winzer erfolgreich bei der Chardonnay du Monde 2010
Sechs australische Chardonnays gewinnen Silbermedaillen bei der Chardonnay du Monde 2010 in Frankreich. Die zum 17ten Mal abgehaltene Ausscheidung fand wenigen Tagen im Burgund in Frankreich statt.
Mit 887 Weinen aus 37 Ländern nahm in diesem Jahr eine Rekordanzahl an Chardonnays aus aller Welt teil. Und die 300 Preisrichter verteilten 296 Medaillen. So gab es zwar in diesem Jahr keine australischen Goldmedaillen, dafür eroberten die Chardonnays aus Down Under sechs Silberne.

We have just got news that the Red Hill Estate Chardonnay 2008 has won a Silver Medal at the recent Chardonnay du Monde 2010.
The 17th annual Chardonnay du Monde international wine competition was held between March 10-13th 2010 at Château des Ravatys, the wine estate of the Pasteur Institute at Saint-Lager in the Burgundy wine region (France). A serious place to hold these contests, very prestigious for all wines from France but all other worldwide competitors too.
Chardonnay du Monde is the strongest concentration of chardonnay wine ever realized with 37 countries and 887 wines entered. Chardonnay du Monde occupies a special place amongst international competitions thanks to its worldwide scope and its rigorous method. Strict quality standards and optimal tasting conditions enabled the 300 expert international judges to award a total of 296 medals this year.
There were only 6 wineries from Australia that were awarded Silver Medals, and no Gold Medals were given to Australian Chardonnays. The Mornington Peninsula producer Red Hill managed to score a silver medal in this very tough contest.
Red Hill Estate winemaker Luke Curry notes: “This is a great global recognition of our pursuit for consistency in the Red Hill Estate wines. This wine has been amongst the medals on every occasion that we have entered this prestigious competition and certainly vindicates our decision to adopt an uncompromising approach to quality and maintenance of the cool climate style that we strive for.”
Well done Red Hill Estate Team – one of the top Australian Chardonnays in such an international context – this is great news for wine producers from Down Under.
