Three top winegrowers unite to bring awareness to a forgotten variety Verdelho
Australian Verdelho was found to be ‘the alternative variety we already have’ according to a recent tasting panel for the Wine & Viticulture Journal.

In an effort to bring more consumer awareness to this forgotten wine variety the three award-winning Verdelho winegrowers named for their 2011 vintage – Windowrie The Mill, Bleasdale Potts’s Catch and Tamburlaine organic wines – have banded together to help create an upsurge of interest for a wine that has been described as ‘rivalling the likes of Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay’.
In Australia Verdelho first appeared in the 1820’s and was historically grown in the Hunter Valley. According to the Winemakers’ Federation of Australia, 12,416 tonnes of Verdelho was crushed in the 2010 vintage. Winegrowers Windowrie, Tamburlaine and Bleasdale believe its appeal would grow if more consumers gave it a try and the Downunder Wines team is fully supporting this fresh way of giving credit to a forgotten variety.
“For the past 20 years winemakers have offered Verdelhos which are too sweet. The unoaked and dry nature of these three Verdelhos rival the Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris styles that proliferate the market these days,” says Mark Davidson, winemaker Tamburlaine.
“Verdelho from Canowindra consistently produces great flavoured wines that are beautifully matched to spicy foods. If it were a new variety to Australia it would be giving the likes of Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc a run for their money. However, it remains a tough sell. We have success with it in the cellar door, but it relies on the old adage that once customers taste it, they like it,” says Windowrie family owner Jason O’Dea.
These three wines are all made in a similar manner, with the differing styles due to terroir rather than winemaker influence. The fruit was harvested during the cool of the night in order to retain the pristine fruit condition. Racked off solids the wines were then fermented with aromatic yeasts at controlled, cool temperatures, fined and bottled.
The 2011 Tamburlaine Verdelho was made with some of the latest winemaking technologies available, new settling and filtration equipment in their winery delivered a ‘cleaner’ and more sustainable wine, utilising less power and creating less waste.
“Verdelho is a variety that tends to retain its natural acidity even when fully ripe. It was one of the first varieties planted in Langhorne Creek, and has proven to be well suited to our region. Our 2011 were one of the first varieties off the vine. The cooler conditions saw the fruit ripen with a lower baumé but with substantial flavours,” explains Bleasdale’s winemaker Paul Hotker.
These three dry styles of Verdelhos are perfect companions for lighter Asian inspired dishes of veal, chicken and port. “The contemporary styles are drier than they have historically been, with the varietal fruit becoming the focus,” concludes Hotker.

Sashimi and Sparkling Pinot Noir from Adelaide Hills – a match made in heaven
‘The Bird in Hand Sparkling Pinot’ won a gold medal as the best match with sashimi in the inaugural Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Wine & Spirit Competition this week.
Chinese food and wine pairing is a key factor in the competition, which is the first truly Asian wine competition in the world. Sashimi is traditionally considered the finest food in Japanese cuisine and Bird in Hand’s Chief Winemaker, Kym Milne MW, says the Bird in Hand Sparkling Pinot Noir is one of the wineries most loved and recognized wines – and a perfect match with the subtle sashimi flavours.
“Our Sparkling Pinot Noir is a subtle, vibrant pink sparkling wine, with fresh strawberry and floral like aromas, fine persistent bubbles and a refreshing flavour,” said Milne. “The cool Adelaide Hills nights are ideal for sparkling wine production and help the Pinot Noir to retain bright, fresh, strawberry and cherry-like characters, and good natural acidity which is so important for quality sparkling wine production.”
Asia’s most esteemed wine judges from China, Singapore, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and India gathered to judge the Hong Kong International Wine & Spirit Competition and the strong showing by Australian wines demonstrate their sensitivity and suitability to the Asian palate and cultural consumption patterns.
Bird in Hand is enjoying strong growth in Asia and recently opened two upmarket cellar doors in North East China, with more planned in 2012. “Asia is an important pillar in our global expansion and our awards in the Hong Kong International Wine & Spirit Competition will undoubtedly bolster our sales and marketing efforts in the region,” said Executive Director and founder of Bird in Hand, Andrew Nugent.

Australian Wine meets international drops in Düsseldorf @ Prowein Fair
Auf der Prowein Messe in Düsseldorf – in der Halle 6 sind die Internationals untergebracht, Weine aus Australien treffen hier auf die Tropfen aus Neuseeland, Spanien, Portugal, Chile, Uruguay und man höre und staune aus Indien.
Nach meinen teils amüsanten Erlebnissen mit Winzern in dieser Halle im letzten Jahr, sind in 2011 eher die großen Häuser aus Down Under hier vertreten, deren Stände sind größer und hochprofessionell ausgestattet. Ob sich das alles rechnet, das werden wir in einzelnen Interviews erkunden.

Sydney’s Jung Sommeliers sind der beste Wein Nachwuchs weltweit
Die Sydney Wine Academy gewann jüngst in London den ‘Titel Wine and Sprit Education Trust’ s (WSET) International Educator of the Year’. Bei der jährlichen Zeremonie in der berühmten Guildhall wurden die Sydneysider ausgezeichnet für ihren großartigen Einsatz in der Ausbildung junger Weinenthusiasten.

Bestes Beispiel für die Ausbildungsqualität in Sydney ist der Jungsommelier Jeremy Foot, der als Top Absolvent in Ryde den Student Sommelier of the Year Award erhielt.
Jeremy arbeitet heute in der Rockpool Bar and Grill in Sydney, sicherlich kein schlechter Ort, um als Jungsommelier weitere Kenntniss in Sachen Wein zu erlangen.

The Sydney Wine Academy has won the Wine and Sprit Education Trust’ s (WSET) International Educator of the Year Award. The announcement was made at the annual graduation ceremony in the Guildhall in London. The Sydney Wine Academy received the award for their significant contribution to WSET courses and qualifications and their commitment to innovation in education in the past year.
Ryde College student Jeremy Foot has received the Fine Wine Partners – Philip Shaw Wines – Student Sommelier of the Year Award for 2010. The award is presented to the most outstanding graduate of NSI’s Sydney Wine Academy Certificate III in Hospitality – Sommelier course. Jeremy received the perpetual trophy as well as an all expenses paid trip to visit Philip Shaw’s winery to taste their wines and meet the wine maker.
He completed the Certificate III in Hospitality – Sommeliers course last year, achieving the highest mark in the class. At the same time, he successfully completed Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET®) Level 3 Certificate in Wines and Spirits course. Jeremy now works as a sommelier at Rockpool Bar and Grill restaurant in Sydney.
NSI’s Sydney Wine Academy Director, Clive Hartley said the award provided great encouragement for others like Jeremy looking to enter the industry. “Through this award we can encourage students and provide them with an opportunity to really excel.”

Deutsche Weinsprache – leicht gemacht?
Die Aussprache deutscher Weinfachbegriffe ist ja durchaus schwierig, nicht nur Winzer zwischen Ahr und Sachsen sind für uns Weinliebhaber häufig schwer zu verstehen, nein für einen Nicht-Deutschen erscheint die Hürde einer ‘Trockenbeerenauslese’ oder ‘Saale-Unstrut’ fast unüberwindlich.
Das Deutsche Weininstitut hat daher ein Video herausgebracht, welches uns diese Aussprache erleichtern soll, nicht nur den Sachsen oder Pfälzern in Richtung Hochdeutsch, nein vor allem den Engländern, Franzosen und Australiern. Gute Idee, wie wir finden!

Here is the German help for wine lovers trying to cope with the German language. Is it necessary – well I think yes, as many of our friends struggle with Reisling or Kardonnay in German – I instantly remember this video of Kath and Kim from Downunder tasting wines in London.
The German expressions do have an English sub-title – not bad for a start and helpful for German winemakers too, currently struggling with the English translation of German wine expressions.
