It was quite a surprise for me to see this chalk-sign in Finlands capital city Helsinki in a downtown lunchplace the other day. It was a small place with under 20 seats, all taken by the young and hip finish business scene which used to be dominated by mobile giant Nokia, a dinosaur when it comes to mobile phones. One of my favourite bubble creators from Tasmania Jansz was served by the glass in this place. Jansz is the Australian winemaker that created this wonderful slogan Methode Tasmanoise, in relation to the french way of descibing the methode champenoise as a means to produce sparkling wine by second fermentation in the bottle. Tasmanian sparkling up here in Finland, simply awesome.
Tasmania with its cool climate wine regions and its mostly green-minded wine-makers is perfectly suitable for the growth of cool climate grapes. Warm days and cool nights help the grapes to stay in tact, a perfect combination for delicate sparklings full of flabour and moderate in alcohol.
The summer day in Finland actually reminded me very much of my time in Tasmania – the blue sky full of sunshine and the night quite chilly once the sun settled down.
What a shame as I had to refrain from drinking this wonderful drop at lunchtime as I was having business talks all day long. But there’ll be a next time in Helsinki in this small restaurant – this is for sure.
